Amsterdam is the capital city of the Netherlands. Originally a small fishing town, it has become the largest Dutch city, and the financial heart of the country.

Breathtaking canals, beautiful architecture, and friendly people have made Amsterdam one of the world’s most popular travel destinations. The city is very welcoming and laidback, making it the perfect place for a European adventure. It’s particularly easy to get around by canal bus or tram, but the best way to explore the city is definitely by bike.

Interesting Tidbit

Almost the entire city has been built upon huge stakes which were driven into the sea bed. In fact, if you visit Amsterdam by plane, you’ll land at the Schiphol International Airport, which is actually four meters below sea level!

Hot Spots

There are lots of great sites to see in Amsterdam including wonderful art museums - like the Van Gogh and Rijksmuseum - and interesting historical sites – like the Oude Kerk (Old Church) and the Anne Frank House. The most important sites to visit, however, are probably those that are enjoyed by the local Amsterdammers on a daily basis. Quaint parks, lively town squares, and stunning bridges are where the true magical atmosphere of the city comes through. Take your time to soak up the city’s special rhythms by spending time in the Vondelpark or the Jordaan area.

As the sun sets, Amsterdam begins to shimmer and shine. Don’t miss the vibrant Amsterdam nightlife. Some quality music entertainment venues include the Sugar Factory, Paradiso, and Melkweg. Also, you can join the thousands of tourists for a stroll through the world-famous Red Light District which hosts a myriad of clubs and bars.

Land-Based Casinos

If you’re planning on experiencing some gambling action while in Amsterdam then be sure to visit the Holland Casino. A lavish yet tasteful European casino, the Holland is located right in the city’s center. The building is beautifully designed, with a two-storey layout – slots, and electronic gambling on the ground floor, table games upstairs. The casino is famous for fine cuisine and excellent service.
